My Story

My name is Christine and I am based in Brooklyn, New York. I started my musical journey as a young child studying piano. I was singing in choirs from elementary school onward, and it was through musical theatre where I realized that I wanted to sing on stage. Through this love of musical theatre, I developed a relationship with jazz music, especially jazz trumpet, which I played through my first degree.

There are two defining moments in my musical life that made me want to pursue classical singing and opera. The first was listing to a CD of my dad's, which had Maria Callas singing Rosina from The Barber of Seville. To this day, that version of "Una voce poco fa" is my gold standard. The second defining moment came when I was studying abroad in Cortona, Italy in 2008. One weekend I took the train up to Florence, and saw a production of Madame Butterfly at the opera house. I didn't have a lot of money, so the only ticket I could afford was in the very back of the theatre. Still, I remember being so moved by the singing, especially the Butterfly's, that I was sobbing at intermission and there were standing ovations at the end of each act. Both of these singers (and I still have NO IDEA who sang the role of Butterfly) embody what I believe to be the purpose of music: moving people.

My mission as a singer is to make the audience feel something every time I sing. It doesn't matter if it's a Sunday church service, an improv show, or a concert with orchestra - I want to communicate and open hearts with my singing. I believe that music is a collaborative experience, not just between the performing artists, but between the artist and the audience as well - we feed on the energy we are given.

In New York, I am mostly hired as an ensemble singer, with choirs that perform repertoire throughout the classical cannon - from early renaissance polyphony to 21st century repertoire. I am frequently a soloist with small orchestras, where I have been the alto soloist for various concert works. I am often hired because of my strong sight reading, my accurate coloratura, and my rich low notes. Lately, I have been on a journey to discover where my voice is the most impactful - this has had me focusing on singing works primarily in English and from the 20th and 21st century. I am returning to my jazz and Golden Age musical theatre roots, and focusing on storytelling through song. Additionally, I am hoping to take on more projects that involve interdisciplinary performances, such as singing while movement artists are dancing on stage with me.

When I am not singing I am experiencing everything this incredible city has to offer. I study Italian language, Meisner Technique, Improv Theatre, and Salsa. I maintain an active lifestyle as a cyclist and soccer player. Additionally, I am a writer (you can check out my Substack here), an amateur cook, and an accountant. I have a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alberta, a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Maryland, and an MBA from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, City University of New York. I am also a licensed CPA by the State of New York.
